Entry #7 #MyThoughtsOnHashtags

Whenever I scroll on social media, I often find some posts use a # symbol, known as a hashtag. Hashtags are used to put a specific topic into a link where you can find all sorts of different posts or videos about that topic. If someone's post has #Wii, I could click on that hashtag, and it would give me different results all related to the Wii. Hashtags seem to have originated all the way back in 2007 when a guy named Chris Messina made a post asking people how they felt about using the # sign for specific groups. He wanted online users to have an easier way to find specific content that they would want to find. They eventually became more and more popular around 2009 and many people have been using them since.

I have never used a hashtag before because I never make any posts online. Even if I did make posts, I don't think I would ever use a hashtag. I never really cared too much about hashtags because I could just easily search for what I want to look for and I usually get the results I want. After reading a few articles about hashtags, I could see how they are useful. I think it is neat that I could easily click on a hashtag instead of manually typing what I want to see. I also get to interact with other people who are into the same things as me. I don't know about too many hashtags because I don't really pay attention to them. I mostly play video games so I sometimes see hashtags related to the games that I play but I don't really look at them very often because I don't want to. I have also read an article about how adding hashtags could increase your videos or posts visibility. The article mostly focuses on YouTube Shorts but I'm sure that this also affects other social media sites. I think hashtags could increase visibility but only if its a niche or not commonly used hashtag, using a more popular hashtag could make a video or post harder to find. The way hashtags became popular seems to be same way other online trends have became popular. Someone makes a post or a video about suggesting or doing a specific thing, after a little while more and more people start doing that thing and it eventually becomes a trend. Even though hashtags aren't really a trend anymore and more of a normal thing in social media, the way it became popular is pretty similar to other online trends like rizz or the two consecutive numbers that shall not be named.

Hashtags are a neat way of putting a specific topic into a category where people could easily find posts or videos based on what hashtag they choose. Its pretty fascinating that I'm only a year older than the hashtag and pretty much grew up alongside it. While some people like me don't use hashtags, they are used by other people to easily attract people to their posts or to start some movements or protests. I am a little more open minded to using hashtags now and could see how they are useful.

  1. Your explanation shows how hashtags make it easier to find content and connect with people who share similar interests. Do you think you'll start using hashtags more now that you are familiar with their purpose.
